Meeting on March 4, 2008

Please join the members of the Stevens Alumni Environmental Professionals Club (SAEP) to hear our featured speaker Russell Ford, M.Eng. ’91, Ph.D. ’03, P.E., BCEE, National Water Practice Leader, MWH Americas, Inc.  He will be speaking about:

“FUTURE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE WATER INDUSTRY”

The drinking water treatment industry will be facing some unique challenges over the next 10 to 20 years.  With concerns over global climate change, deteriorating infrastructure, better analytical techniques and diminishing fresh water supplies, many treatment technologies that were once forgotten or considered too expensive are now becoming viable alternatives.  The drive for sustainable solutions or “green” solutions might start to dictate which treatment processes are considered in the future.

The application of ceramic membranes could result in displacing “traditional” microfiltration and ultrafiltration membrane systems.  The shortage of fresh water in some areas is driving many communities to consider reuse of water or to use brackish/seawater desalination.  However, disposal of the residual from these processes must still be addressed.  Regulation of endocrine disrupting compounds is on the forefront of the USEPA agenda.  As more analytical techniques are being developed to measure each of these compounds, more studies will start to occur regarding the health effects and then the subsequent need to remove them from our water supplies.  Treatment of these compounds will be a combination of traditional and new treatment processes.

How can we achieve more organic removal, or remove compounds such as arsenic, perchlorate and radionuclide.  Will radon become a major source of concern for many of the groundwater systems within the state?  Decisions on how to retrofit old facilities that have site constraints will need to be made.  The utility that can best harness an understanding of how all of these pieces fit together will be in the best position to meet the water quantity and quality challenges of the future.

Dr. Russell Ford is the MWH’s National Water Practice Leader.  He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University and a Master of Engineering and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.  For over 20 years, he has evaluated, designed and constructed a variety of conventional and advanced water treatment system processes and facilities.  He is a past chairperson of the AWWA Plant Operations Research Committee and also the Past Section Chair for the New Jersey Section of AWWA and Trustee of AWWA’s Water Science and Research Division.  Dr. Ford is an appointed member of the New Jersey Drinking Water Quality Institute.  He is also a Professional Engineer and licensed water treatment plant operator.
